What is the frequency and magnitude of past earthquakes in this region?Because Vancouver lies near a zone where all three types of plate boundaries movements-- transform, convergent and divergent-- take place, major earthquakes happen frequently. Some major earthquakes include: the M=8.1 Queen Charlotte Island earthquake of 1949, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake beneath the Seattle-Tacoma region in 2001, and a magnitude 7.3 earthquake on central Vancouver Island in 1946. However, very minor earthquakes are recorded everyday in BC. These earthquakes are so small that most people can't even feel it. Below is a link to a website where all of BC's earthquakes are tracked and recorded.
